It is with great sorrow that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of Red Hot Iron, TRRAC's oldest resident and a beloved homebred of Maui Meadow Farm. Red Hot Iron passed away peacefully on March 29, 2023, at the age of 31, only a few weeks shy of her official foaling date.

Red Hot Iron was sired by "Iron," an unraced son of Mr. Prospector out of a Buckpasser mare. The mare was bred by Mr. and Mrs. Charles B. Lyman Jr. of Maui Meadow Farm, which is known as Pennsylvania's oldest thoroughbred farm in the state, and raced in partnership with Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Holman.

As a youngster, Red Hot Iron appeared to lack the talent to be a successful racehorse and was noted to be quite lazy and extremely unmotivated, often never moving faster than a slow lope at the farm's training track despite encouragement. However, upon her transfer to Philadelphia Park, which is now known as Parx, she quickly transformed, and in a remarkable turn of events, Red Hot Iron went on to win her next four starts in a row after failing at her first start. Red Hot Iron earned an impressive $344,079 in her career as a graded stakes-placed horse. Her final statistics were impressive, with 32 starts and 12 wins, most of which were under jockey Anthony (Tony) Black.

Red Hot Iron's notable victories included winning the Duo Disco Handicap twice (1996 & 1997), the Race Street Handicap (1997), and the Pistol Packer Handicap (1997). She retired from her racing career after earning the title of Philadelphia Park's Horse Of The Year in 1997 and returned to Maui Meadow Farm, where she went on to foal three foals, including "Hot Smile," a 2006 filly by Ops Smile, who earned an impressive $293,822.

Red Hot Iron was related to Rich Strike through her dam's side, with her first dam's sire's dam being out of "Apple Bomb," who was bred by Maui Meadow Farm and is listed on Grade 1 winner Rich Strike's dam's side.

Red Hot Iron was retired by her partners into permanent sanctuary in her older age, where she lived comfortably until her passing. She was a beloved mare whose memory will always be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing her.

The 42 organizations include 41 previously accredited organizations and one that received accreditation for the first time. The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, the only accrediting body in Thoroughbred aftercare, now has a network of 81 organizations with approximately 180 facilities in North America.

TRRAC Was reaccredited for a second time with the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance.

“Congratulations to the 42 organizations who earned their Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance accreditation. Earning TAA accreditation is a true testament to an organization’s dedication to providing the best care possible for our Thoroughbreds,” said TAA President, Jeffrey Bloom.

“TAA-accreditation proves to the racing industry that its Thoroughbreds are going to the best possible aftercare organizations in North America, and although this stamp of approval is reassuring, funding is still a concern to assist these groups and the thousands of retired racehorses in their care. We encourage everyone to support the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and its 81 accredited charities.”

About the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance

Based in Lexington, KY, the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that accredits, inspects, and awards grants to approved aftercare organizations to retrain, rehome, and retire Thoroughbreds using industry-wide funding. Along with continued funding from its original partners' the Breeders’ Cup, The Jockey Club, and Keeneland Association, the TAA is supported by owners, trainers, breeders, racetracks, aftercare professionals, and other industry members. Since its inception in 2012, the TAA has granted more than $24.5 million to accredited aftercare organizations. Currently, 81 aftercare organizations comprised of approximately 180

TRRAC INITIATES “THOROUGHBRED RECREATIONAL PROGRAM (TRP)”

TRRAC Thoroughbred Aftercare has initiated the start of the Thoroughbred Recreational Program, which will focus solely on the training of retired thoroughbred racehorses for recreational and leisure riding. The program is expected to fully launch in the spring of 2023 but has started a “soft launch” for the program and educational planning. The program will offer what it calls “TRP Certified” horses for adoption. These horses will be trained in an advanced professional training program that will aim towards assisting horses who are disadvantaged for competitive careers such as show jumping and will offer extensive training for trail and obstacle work. Horses will be trained in both English and western tack and will need to pass a number of strict assessments to graduate as a TRP-trained horse. After a horse receives their passing grade, each horse will then be offered for adoption through TRRAC. It is the hope of the TRP that the program will facilitate a larger number of adopted horses professionally trained for amateur owners and riders, and offer a broader career path for horses who are disadvantaged in being placed as show horses or in an upper-level career. These career paths include therapy horses, trail horses, police horses, and leisure mounts.

The TRP program will also partner with several venues to offer educational seminars, training clinics as well as community-based forums and support for owners of off-track thoroughbreds. The TRP plans to offer fun and educational events such as judged trail rides, recreational games (mounted archery, etc.) as well as competitive trail obstacle courses, which will include “in-hand” classes for modeling as well as in-hand showing with trail obstacle courses for horses who are unable to be ridden as well as for para-equestrians who wish to attend with their horses.

The TRP is currently recruiting committee members that are excited to help with planning and contribute ideas towards the program.
With 2022 in full swing, TRRAC Thoroughbred Aftercare has accepted its third resident stallion that will join the organization's retired roster, the second stallion intake of 2022.

"Il Postino" is a 2006 son of Distorted Humor and shipped to TRRAC on April 3, 2022. The decision was made to retire the stallion from stud and place him responsibly in aftercare by his connections.

Il Postino was sold for $300,000 as a yearling in the September Keeneland sale in 2007 before starting his career in racing where he earned $132,924 in 22 starts.

Retired from racing, he was an active breeding stallion in New Jersey and sired runners on the track who are actively racing to this date. His top progeny includes, "Postino's Idol", a 2013 mare who has earned $256,338 in 54 starts, stakes placed "Postino's Champion" who has earned $257,977 in 58 starts, "Postino's Secret" who has earned $130,485 and stakes winner "Alta Velocita" who has earned $334,018 in just 19 starts.

<img src="https://static.wixstatic.com/media/a70d69_77eaaab904494f48babf7a21d93f7bc8~mv2.jpeg/v1/fit/w_1000,h_1000,al_c,q_80/file.png"title="Il Postino Arrives at TRRAC">

TRRAC welcomed the organization's first stallion intake in December of 2020, "Toy Solider", after his owner suddenly passed away and a call was placed to the organization asking for help to house the stallion.

TRRAC was informed there were "really no other places that will take or can successfully and safely house a breeding stallion". TRRAC is stationed at Maui Meadow Farm, Pennsylvania's oldest thoroughbred farm in the state since 1946- where Pennsylvania's first syndicated stallion , "Bold Effort" son of Bold Ruler, once stood decades ago under General Charles B. Lyman.

The farm housed and active breeding program until 2018, managed by his grandson, Charles B Lyman III. The farm is equipped to house and handle multiple stallions between facility as well as professional knowledge and care of the Lyman's who also run TRRAC. The match was a perfect fit.

A year after Toy Soldier's arrival, another stallion arrived to TRRAC in need of a safe place to call home. "Capitano", a 2001 son of "Belong To Me", who once stood at Fox Tale Stud, arrived to Maui Meadow Farm in January of 2022. He was awarded a grant from After The Finish Line that helped with assistance with veterinarian care, vaccines, farrier care and nutrition. The stallion quickly settled in and the little stallion (standing at a mere 15.2) in the big front window stall is now a fixture that peers over his dutch door and welcomes company with his inquisitive nature.

The need for stallion placement arose due to odd circumstances for all three horses who otherwise would have nowhere to retire to. The farm is situated on 65 acres in a quiet atmosphere. Each horse enjoys an early morning run as grooms clean their stalls. They are then bathed and groomed before returning for lunch and eventual dinner and finally night check.

TRRAC welcomes public visits and education for all horses at the facility, perfect for any thoroughbred fan to engage and learn bloodline history. As the organization thrives from public support, donations made be made online to help with the support and care of the organization's resident horses which cover daily nutrition and care costs.

West Chester, Pa - Thoroughbred Retirement, Rehabilitation, and Careers, a 501(c)3 non-profit thoroughbred racehorse placement program are very proud to announce it’s official accreditation by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, as one of 34 newly accredited organizations in 2020.

TRRAC completed the thorough application processes as well as thorough facility and horse inspections set forth by the TAA. The TAA’s mission statement as written officially on their website states:

“The 501(c)(3) nonprofit Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance accredits, inspects, and awards grants to approved aftercare organizations to retrain, retire, and rehome Thoroughbreds using industry-wide funding.

Since 2012, the TAA has granted more than $20.7 million to accredited aftercare organizations and 11,000 Thoroughbreds have been retrained, rehomed, or retired by accredited organizations.

Currently, 81 organizations with approximately 170 facilities hold TAA accreditation.”

Along with a thorough inspection and application process, TRRAC is bound to uphold The TAA Code of Standards, which covers the following areas: operations, education, horse health and care, facility standards, and adoption policies and standards.

TRRAC is proud to have been accepted as an accredited program- allowing us to remain at the highest standards of thoroughbred aftercare. With this accreditation, TRRAC has been able to expand its program to house up to 35 horses total at one time and we hope to be able to accommodate more within the years to come.

We would like to personally thank everyone for their support. We kindly thank our wonderful adopters, who care for the horses they have adopted. We also cannot give enough thanks to our volunteers who have dedicated their time and efforts towards our program, especially towards our horses.

We also give many thanks to our wonderful staff who work very hard to ensure our horses are kept in top condition, as well as have thoroughly screened applicants and work hard to ensure each horse is thriving in their new home.

We especially appreciate and thank our donors for their assistance. Your kind support has helped in many, many ways during these trying times in 2020. Each and every day we work tirelessly to ensure our horses are well-fed, comfortable, happy, and thrive in new careers. Each dollar goes a long way in our program to cover expenses from feed, farrier care, and veterinary visits.

Without all of your help, we would not be able to serve the horses who seek safe placement as well as assist the breeders, owners, and trainers who trust us to facilitate proper placement of each horse in our program. Despite COVID and the setbacks of 2020, many good things have come to light and we are ever so thankful for the loving support of everyone who seeks to support the TRRAC program and its horses. It is our hope that we continue to move forward and upward by providing aftercare services and sanctuary to retiring racehorses.

We look forward to a wonderful 2021 year with hopeful expansion to help facilitate the safe placement of even more horses.

TRRAC – Thoroughbred Retirement, Rehabilitation, and Careers – in West Chester is one of the many rescues and rehabilitation facilities in the Philadelphia area that are struggling amidst the coronavirus pandemic, writes Erin McCarthy for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

TRRAC is a nonprofit run by Nina and Charles Lyman. The pair rehabilitates retired thoroughbred racehorses on their 65-acre farm.

“We’re not doing terrible, but things have certainly slowed down,” said Nina Lyman. “We’ve been getting an influx of horses.”

She said that adoptions have become less frequent, as it is no longer easy for people to visit the farm and see the horses in person. Thus, the Lymans have been offering video appointments, in lieu of visits, to potential adopters.

Most people, however, want to see a horse in person before they decide on whether they are willing to adopt.

And now that horse racing has been halted, the rehabilitation facility has also seen its funding slow down for the horses’ medical and surgical care.

The donations the nonprofit receives have also fallen by almost half.

Greetings! Thoroughbred Retirement Rehabilitation and Careers is excited to announce and promote a new incentive for approved trainers competing in the 2020 Retired Race Horse Project's Thoroughbred Makeover, held in Lexington, Kentucky from October 7-10 at the Kentucky Horse Park.

As per the Thoroughbred Makeover's website statement of the event:
"The Retired Racehorse Project, a 501(c)3 charitable organization, created the Thoroughbred Makeover to showcase the trainability and talent of off-track Thoroughbreds. The competition is intended to inspire good trainers to become involved in transitioning these horses to second careers, and the National Symposium serves to educate the people involved in the care, training, and sale of these horses to responsible owners.

This is the only national gathering of the organizations, trainers, and farms dedicated to serving these horses when they retire from racing.

Hundreds of off-track Thoroughbreds, each with 10 months or less of retraining. Three days of competition in 10 different disciplines, vying for a share of over $135,000 in prize money. Thousands of spectators watching online and in person. And at the end, one overall winner crowned Thoroughbred Makeover Champion."

With the date of February 15 approaching, the Retired Race Horse Project will announce it's a list of accepted trainers who will then be choosing a retired thoroughbred racehorse to retrain and compete in a discipline they have chosen, up to two, at the Thoroughbred Makeover. These disciplines will showcase the horse's talent and training through their trainers in the months they have transitioned off the track into a new career. Final horse entries must be completed and submitted to the Thoroughbred Makeover by July 31, 2020.

TRRAC is offering approved trainers the opportunity to acquire a retired horse through its aftercare program, free of cost. The program will run from January 20 until July 31, where various horses will be offered to accepted trainers throughout this time. The horses offered on this list are horses who have been let down, microchipped and are up-to-date on their shoeing, vaccines, de-wormer, and Coggins. Most have unlimited career potential and are upper-level prospects. The horses offered have also been assessed by the program and if need be, have been rehabilitated from minor sports injuries. Most are accompanied by diagnostics such as x-rays or have visited New Bolton Center for a complete soundness assessment.

Aside from this program, ANY horse adopted from TRRAC (even outside the sponsorship program) is eligible for a $500 incentive, awarded to the highest placing competing horse acquired from TRRAC at the 2020 Thoroughbred Makeover.

Stipulations of the program are as follows:

- Trainers must be an accepted trainer of the RRP Thoroughbred Makeover for 2020

- Trainers must have an approved application on file through TRRAC, available at this link.

- Acquired horses in this program must compete at the 2020 Makeover. If it is found the horse is unsuitable due to soundness, the horse may be returned to TRRAC at any time and a replacement horse may be offered.

-A contract must be signed between TRRAC and interested competitors acquiring a horse through this incentive. Certain restrictions apply.

- Trainers must register the horse acquired with TRRAC, including the horse's discipline they are competing in by August 15, 2020. This may be easily done on TRRAC's website. A reminder newsletter will be sent.

- Horses may be re-homed or sold at or after the Makeover and placed in the Makeover's ASPCA Marketplace with trainers donating 5% of the horse's sale price back to TRRAC and a transfer of contract completed to the new owners. This can be done the same day if the trainer has sold the horse at the Makeover. Horses entered in the Marketplace will be advertised through TRRAC either on the TRRAC website or at TRRAC's booth present at the 2020 Thoroughbred Makeover vendor area.

- Trainers who have acquired a horse who does not compete at the 2020 Thoroughbred Makeover will be required to pay a $500 adoption fee to TRRAC Thoroughbred Aftercare, or return the acquired horse.

- A $500 incentive will be awarded to the highest placing horse adopted from TRRAC competing in the 2020 Thoroughbred Makeover. The award money will be awarded within 30 days of the conclusion of the Thoroughbred Makeover after final results are calculated. In the event of a tie, prize money will be split.

- TRRAC will require a monthly update of the horse's progress in training in the form of a social media page, email or blog. TRRAC will reserve the right to repost content from each trainer, including photos as the organization sees fit, either in the form of a social media post, blog or website material.

With the holidays approaching, many of our horses have had deposits placed and await their new homes! We are pleased that all of our rescues from the auction and slaughter pipeline have found their permanent homes.

If everyone remembers, Pico Suave was a lovely chestnut gelding discarded in the slaughter pipeline. With an unknown history after his racing career was over years ago, he was found to be in horrendous condition.

With much love and TLC (and a lot of donations) Pico gradually regained health and flourished in our program. His first few rides went very well and he was placed for adoption. We are pleased to announce he is pending and currently on local trial.

2018 has been successful in transitioning horses off the track. We currently work with three aftercare programs, with a fourth, "Second Call" wishing to partner with us. Our program holds approximately 20 horses at one time in various stages of let down, rehabilitation, training and available for adoption.

We promised to keep everyone updated on the little chestnut gelding we made a home offer to identified as "Pico Suave" - a winner of $241,114 found battered, thin and sick in a kill pen not far from us. We were asked to take Pico in, as no one else could or would at the time. He is currently still in quarantine.

In the past 45 days Pico (now named Prince) has slowly started to pick up. Luckily (we re extremely grateful and thankful) we received donations towards his care- which has amounted to quite a lot. Pico Suave's current costs incurred are as follows:

Shipping/Quarantine totaled $615.00 - Paid

His first vet bill was on Aug 29, of which he was found to have an upper respiratory infection. Pico received two doses of Excede to help clear it. He had a blood drawl and was noted to be very thin with skin rot. Sadly, the tag glued to his skin on his back was very hard to remove and took his hide off as well. That must have hurt badly..

Aug 29 vet bill totaled $245.80 - PAID

Poor Pico Suave... so we continued on with his treatments and time. I asked the vet to return in about two weeks to check in on him. Meanwhile, he received a trim, which totaled $30 and was also paid.

Slowly, Pico Suave has gained weight and his bite marks and wounds are clearing up. I was sent these photos!

And his photos with the farrier... total $30.00 - PAID

Pico Suave had another visit from the vet on September 12, of which we got his teeth done, blood tests, vaccinations and a general recheck. His teeth were very sharp and had not been done in a long time. Pico Suave's blood work unfortunately did not come back 100% and now he must remain in quarantine for a little bit longer.

Total bill: $455.75

If you are interested in helping with Pico's recent vet bill, please donate to his campaign here:

https://trrac.givingfuel.com/donate-to-help-pico-suave

Pico will need another recheck with the vet, which will be more costs. It is also getting cold and Pico will need a sheet and a medium blanket. Please contact us at mauimeadowfarm@gmail.com if you would like to help support him.

We thank our donors for items and monetary donations already sent to Pico Suave. It is REALLY appreciated and goes a long way for this poor horse down on his luck.

Our program has now launched a new feature for those inquiring about horses "sight unseen". Utilizing "Google Duo", you can now schedule live appointments to view horses. During your appointment, view horses in the shedrow, live video of them being worked in the ring, cross country, trail riding or IN the show ring (if we are currently showing). Ask questions during your live appointment and more.

Deciding on a horse? Awesome! We will even live stream your horse loading up and shipping out. We are making "sight unseen" a bit easier so you can see the type of horse you are receiving no questions asked.

As we always do our best to send current photos and video, there is always back and forth with questions, more photo requests and more. We feel we can expedite your questions in an easier way!

So how does it work? It's easy and works just like a physical appointment!

1) Submit an adoption application
2) Give us a call to chat or send us an email. We will narrow down the horses you want to see as well as who will be a good fit.
3) Schedule an appointment during our hours of operation. Google Duo is often set up already on Android devices and is also available for iPhone users. We'll give you a call during your time slot. You can view the horses even with your trainer, friends, parents and more.
4) If interested in a horse in particular, proceed as you normally would (contracts, pre-purchase, deposit, etc.)
5) If you're far away, we can help with shipping!
6) Enjoy your new partnership with your best friend!

Pico Suave Update 9/4

I just want to thank all of our supporters and those who donate to us.
I just wanted to update everyone on the little chestnut gelding we gave a home offer to that made it out of the auction/slaughter pipeline and was helped by his previous connections. Pico Suave, is a 6 figure winner of nearly 250k. Born in 2008, he is by Pico Central (BRZ) and really seemed to be in a hard spot to find a home. No one wanted to take him. NO ONE... so, we took him in. He was battered, bitten, had split hooves and a matted mane and tail. He also has an ulcerated scar in his right eye.

I decided to send Pico to Cindy Noll, which was a bit of a life save as we were really not anticipating not only taking a horse in on the fly, but also getting him picked up and finding propert quarantine in only a few days. We are very grateful to Cindy for helping us.

Pico loaded up and arrived in New York. Father than I wanted him to be from us- but I am not worried as Cindy has been sending me nearly daily updates of him.

I eventually had the local vet visit Pico. I expressed we wanted a physical exam, lameness evaluation, coggins (vaccinations if possible if he was healthy) and a general wellness check. While it seems that Pico is just malnourished and beat up, mane and tail in knots and matted- he seems to be okay overall. He does have vision in his eye. His feet are splayed and cracked and he is in dire need of a dentist. He also has terrible rain rot.

The removal of his "kill tags" were not easy, as they were glued tight to his hide. Unfortunately, the removal left him with peeling his hide off as well. I can only imagine how painful it was to have that tag on, burning his back.

The vet's emailed me a report about Pico's findings. He seems weak behind, seriously in need of a farrier (which we scheduled). He has an upper respiratory infection and was administered Excede to help clear it. I asked the vet to return in a short while to check Pico again and if healthy, give him his vaccinations. His plan is to transfer to our facility here when he is cleared and strong enough for travel.

With the help of our followers- we were able to assist this horse out of the slaughter pipeline and ship him to quarantine where he will remain there for a minimum of 30 days. We have contacted the vet, who will be arriving on Monday to check on Pico, now known as "Prince". We have asked for bloodwork, a coggins, vaccinations, a physical evaluation, a soundness exam and to also look in his eye- which we believe him to be blind in.
